Where do the savings in a compressed air station come from?

SmartAir & Tamppi: Energy efficiency for industry

Compressed air plays a critical role in ensuring efficient and smooth production in many applications. At SmartAir, we believe we can add value, especially in ensuring energy-efficient and high-quality compressed air – that is what we specialize in.

Because of this, we decided to reach our target group in Tampere, which combines technical experts and humor in an interesting way.

Where do the savings come from?

The recipe is simple:

1. Manage the whole thing

The quantity, costs and quality of compressed air must be controlled, for example through flow and dew point metering (Could the property operate without a water meter?).

2. Know where consumption is generated

Knowing where compressed air is used allows you to target the right measures. Sometimes the solution is simple, such as closing the valve when the need ends.

3. Fix leaks

Compressed air leaks are often the “background noise” of production. According to our research, they can account for up to 15% of total % consumption. Identifying and repairing leaks brings direct savings.

Practical example (Tamppi p. 11)

The following was implemented at the site:

  • Compressed air leak mapping for the entire compressed air system
  • compressed air station energy audited
  • compressed air flow measurement was performed using PVS SmartAir

After these actions, SmartAir analyzed the energy saving potential and the required investments. The calculated payback period for the site was under 12 months. SmartAir planned the necessary actions and agreed on their implementation together with the customer.

The end result was more energy-efficient compressed air and the availability of compressed air could be verified.

Achieved savings and benefits:

  • 2 m³/min compressed air reduction
  • 24 kWh less energy consumption
  • over €20,000 annual savings
  • compressed air availability and quality assurance were verified
